The family of a police officer who was killed in a car crash is filing a lawsuit against the man who killed him, as well as Ford Motor Company. They claim that the Crown Victoria that Freeto was driving was unsafe and that faulty designs in its manufacturing process led to his death.

Dwayne Freeto was killed two years ago after another driver slammed into his car on Interstate 35W. He was attempting to help a stranded motorist when Samuel Lee Hilburn, drunk, crashed his car into Freeto's. Hillburn was convicted of intoxication manslaughter and is currently serving 13 years in prison.

The family attorney for Freeto's family, Mark Haney, said that Crown Victorias are a deathtrap and have a poorly designed gas tank.

A simple google search reveals that there is indeed quite a bit of press about the faulty design of the Crown Victoria gas tank.

Visit here for more information about the design flaws.

This website gives a timeline of several deaths that have occurred as a result of the flawed design. The numbers are astonishing! According to the website, Ford quit selling these cars to the public in 2007, however, they still sell the cars to police organizations and cab companies around the country.

This is another frivolous pursuit of some free pie in the sky. Time after time, Ford has been vindicated in many bandwagon-jumping, class-action suits by self-serving attorneys. The most recent has been the state-by-state dismissal of the class-action against Ford for this very situation. The NIHTSA and many other investigative agencies have found the Ford Crown Victoria's gas tank design to be without fault in the few isolated cases where there was a fire as a result of a rear-end collision. In all those cases, the fault has been put where it belongs...in the lap of faulty, unprofessional equipment installations inside the trunks of police cars. This finding has resulted in the dismissal of all of these cases in courts all over the United States. In fact, the Crown Victoria Police Car is the ONLY Police vehicle of its type to be tested to withstand 75-mph rear impacts. The Chevrolet Impala's and Dodge Charger's parent manufacturers will NOT submit their products for that type of impact, likely because they know the results ahead of time. Do not be taken in by these gold-digging claimants who seek out the deepest pockets they can find. The Ford CVPI is still the one and only "Safest" car in the industry for Police Departments to consider. Get over it and move on.

Just another example of an ambulance chasing POS lawyer, going after a poor guy who is sitting in prison just because he had the bad luck to run into a stupid pig stopped in the middle of the highway !!

@Sam Roberts: 100 percent correct. The Crown Victoria and sister, Mercury Grand Marquis, are the safest vehicles on the road. Anyone understanding basic physics would understand the incredible energy in a 75MPH rear collision. I am surprised Ford would test to that standard as any reasonable person would not. The lawsuit holds no merit.

- Because he killed a cop due to his negligence. He was hammered, driving down the highway and plowed into a cop. It doesn't matter if the gas tank is faulty or not. If he wasn't driving drunk he would have avoiding the collision that killed someone. How about I get hammered, get behind the wheel and drive into your family's minivan going 80mph, then I'll sue the car company for not making safer bumpers.

Jackasses!
