A USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) investigation of two Nebraska processing plants has revealed E. coli contamination occurred because some production was taking place under unsanitary conditions. There have been over 41 illnesses and dozens of hospitalizations to consumers in Michigan and Ohio. There is also another outbreak emerging in Georgia and health officials are trying to determine if dozens of cases are linked to Michigan and Ohio.

The Nebraska Beef Company has recalled all 5.3 million pounds of meat produced for ground beef between May 16 and June 26, which is ten times the amount in the original recall. The states named in the recall were Nebraska, Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas. It’s still not clear if any of the contaminated meat was sent to any other states.
